What this document covers
This policy explains what information Dead Air Music collects when you use the app, why we collect it, who we share it with, and what choices you have. We've written it in plain language. If anything is unclear, email us at the address above.
Information we collect
1.1 Account information
When you first open the app, we create an anonymous session automatically — no sign-up required. This session has a random ID and no identifying information attached to it.
If you choose to create an account or subscribe, we collect:
- Email address — used to identify your account and send receipts
- Password (stored as a hash — we never see your actual password)
If you sign in through a third-party authentication provider, we receive a unique identifier and, if you choose to share it, your name and email address from that provider.
1.2 Subscription and payment information
Subscriptions are processed through the app store platform you use (iOS or Android). We never see or store your payment card details — those are handled entirely by the platform.
We do retain, through our subscription management infrastructure:
- Your subscription tier (free trial, monthly, annual)
- Subscription status (active, expired, cancelled)
- Renewal date
1.3 Listening history
Every track you listen to is logged. Each log entry contains:
- Track title, artist name, and ISRC (a standard music industry identifier)
- The date and time playback started
- How many seconds you actually listened (not assumed — measured)
- The full duration of the track
Why we keep this: We are legally required to report performance data to music royalty collection organizations under 17 U.S.C. § 114 of the US Copyright Act. This reporting ensures that royalties are distributed to artists and rights holders for digital radio performances. We cannot offer the service without it.
We retain listening history for a minimum of three years to satisfy statutory record-keeping requirements.
1.4 Location (approximate)
Dead Air requests access to your device's coarse location (approximate location, not precise GPS) to show nearby concerts and local weather. We do not access your precise GPS coordinates.
- We use coarse device location (approximate location provided by your device's OS) — not precise GPS coordinates.
- Your approximate location is used to retrieve local weather conditions and surface nearby concert listings.
- We store the resulting weather snapshot in our database. Listeners in the same area may share a cached weather snapshot rather than triggering a redundant fetch.
- We poll for updated weather approximately every 15 minutes while you are actively listening with weather drops enabled.
Weather drops are off by default and can be toggled at any time in Settings → Weather. Turning them off stops all weather-related location lookups immediately.
We do not use your location for advertising, profiling, or any purpose other than fetching local weather conditions and nearby concert listings.
1.5 Dial preferences
We store the position of your three tuning dials (Music, Vibe, DJ) in your profile. This is what makes your station feel like yours when you reopen the app.
1.6 Trial status
When you first launch the app, we record the timestamp of your first session. This is how we calculate when your 7-day free trial starts and ends. Trial state is calculated on our servers — we don't trust the device clock for this.
1.7 Usage analytics
We collect anonymized data about how you interact with the app, including when the app is opened, when the paywall is viewed, and whether a subscription is started or restored. This data is tied to your user ID and sent to an analytics platform we use to understand how the product is performing and where listeners drop off.
We do not collect behavioral data for advertising purposes. Analytics data is used solely for product improvement.
1.8 Connection type
The app reads your network connection type (Wi-Fi, 4G, 3G) to select the appropriate audio stream bitrate. This is read on-device and is not stored or transmitted to our servers.

Who we share information with
We share data only with the categories of service providers necessary to operate the app:
| Category | What they receive | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Database and authentication hosting | Account data, listening history, approximate location data, dial preferences | Core infrastructure |
| Subscription management | Subscription status, purchase events | Managing billing and entitlements |
| App store platforms | Payment and purchase data | In-app purchase processing |
| Cloud infrastructure and CDN | Audio file delivery | Serving music to your device |

We do not share your data with data brokers, advertisers, analytics platforms, or any other third parties beyond those categories listed above.
Royalty reporting data contains aggregate play counts and tuning hours — not individual listener-level data identifying you personally.

| Account data | Until you delete your account, then within 30 days |
